Creating an environment-friendly portfolio from paper

Driving towards sustainability

As global vehicle numbers continue to climb, the environmental cost of rubber production has become harder to ignore. While much attention is given to electric and biofuel transitions, another shift is happening behind the scenes with materials that make vehicles run smoother, longer, but with a lower carbon footprint.

“At Caldic, we’re always looking for ways to reduce environmental impact across industries,” says Lucas Almeida, Internal Seller, Marketing, Caldic LATAM. “That’s why our collaboration with Klabin, one of the largest paper producers in Brazil, was such a natural fit. They had developed something truly exciting: a lignin-based antioxidant for rubber.”

Lignin, often regarded as a low-value by-product of paper manufacturing, is now being seen in a new light. “It’s the second most abundant biopolymer on Earth. Klabin discovered it could be used as an antioxidant in rubber - essentially replacing petroleum-based compounds that prevent tires from breaking down over time.”

With Klabin leading the innovation, Caldic stepped in to bring it to market. “Our commercial and application development teams worked closely with them to explore how lignin could be integrated into rubber formulations. And because of our close customer relationships and deep market understanding, we were able to flag potential hurdles early and guide improvements.”

A natural alternative that performs

The result of this collaboration was Caltiox L - a lignin-based antioxidant solution that redefines performance standards.

“Our experts analyzed the material and confirmed it could replace the traditional petroleum-derived antioxidant in several rubber applications. With a carbon footprint that’s nearly 80% lower, it was clear we had something special.”

This breakthrough reshaped our marketing and customer engagement strategy. “Once we saw the potential, we knew our role was to create visibility and momentum,” says Lucas. “We introduced Caltiox L to our customers, and the response was immediate. There’s real demand out there for sustainable alternatives that don’t compromise on performance.”

As the push for greener materials gains urgency, Caldic’s role as a connector between innovation and industry is more important than ever. “We’re not just distributing products - we’re helping transform how they’re made, used, and valued. Caltiox L is proof that with the right collaboration, sustainability and performance can go hand in hand.”

  • These industries evolve toward smarter and sustainable manufacturing. Caldic provides specialty solutions for textiles, leather and paper, with technical labs and local formulation support.
