A custom solution to a common challenge in heat transfer fluid technology

Finding an alternative

One of our business partners was looking for viable heat transfer fluid technology after their standard product was placed on the Authorization List by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA).

For 25 years, the customer had been using a hydrogenated terphenyl-based fluid at their plant in France. Now that it was classified as a Substance of Very High Concern (SVHC), they needed to find an alternative in line with European guidelines and their corporate sustainability agenda.

The challenge was replacing it with a substance with the same performance. Hydrogenated terphenyl is widely used for its efficiency, reliability and stability even at temperatures as high as 340°C.

Not one solution to the problem, but two

Christophe Moguel, Product Manager at Caldic France, said that the customer approached us “because we’re recognized for our unparalleled services offering.” We serve this particular customer with specialty ingredients for their manufacturing operation, but they knew they could count on us to solve the installation technology challenge, too.

Our experts visited the production site and performed a thorough audit of the current situation. The results showed technical and historical issues with the heat transfer process and the installed base.

Following the comprehensive assessment, our experts developed two tailor-made Caltherm® solutions based on different fluid technologies: silicone and synthetic.

“We customized the technologies for the specific demands of the plant," explains Christophe. “Based on the technical environment, we agreed with our partner that the synthetic option was the best choice.”

The Caltherm® product outperforms the old one

Fully aligned with ECHA recommendations, our Caltherm® solutions ensure compliance with regulations. “This is about responsibility beyond legal requirements,” adds Christophe. “We’re proud to help our partners promote safer alternatives and maintain transparency in the supply chain."

Besides managing the risks associated with chemical substances, the Caldic team achieved a performance improvement. With a higher flash point than the traditional product and a longer lifespan, the customer is now using a higher-quality heat transfer fluid.

"Our comprehensive heat transfer fluid solutions combined with our technical expertise, know-how of industrial installations and wide range of supporting products and services, enable us to help you drive your operational plant efficiency for a more sustainable future."
