Ever wondered what it’s like to smell freshly harvested hops? Brewing enthusiasts and market leaders at the 2023 Hop & Brew School® got the chance to do just that.
In the world of brewing, few things are as captivating as the scent of freshly harvested hops. Patrizia Zanier, Managing Director, Mr. Malt® - P.A.B. S.r.l. - the Caldic brand for brewers, describes it as “an aroma that’s alive: citrusy, floral, a little spicy - it’s the heart of the beer before the beer even exists.”
That experience was at the center of the first-ever Italian edition of the Hop & Brew School, an annual event organized by Mr. Malt’s key principal, Yakima Chief Hops®. “They brought hops straight from the US, harvested just weeks earlier in September,” she says. “It was an incredible opportunity for brewers and hop enthusiasts here in Italy to connect directly with the ingredient in its purest form.”
Hosted at Malt’s spacious premises in Italy, the event gathered professional brewers -many of them existing or potential customers - for a day of knowledge-sharing and sensory immersion. “The Hop & Brew School is more than just a workshop,” she begins, “It’s harvest updates, panel discussions, and training all rolled into one. This year, we had speakers from Italy, New Zealand, and the UK sharing insights into trends shaping the brewing and hops industry.”
The sensory analysis session was a particular highlight. Participants got to handle the hops the traditional way: rubbing them in their palms, inhaling deeply to capture every note. They could feel the moisture, see the vivid color, and understand exactly what gives each hop its character. For many, it was the first time experiencing the kind of hops used in IPA, APA, and NEIPA styles at this level of freshness.
Behind the scenes, Mr. Malt’s team worked closely with Yakima Chief Hops to ensure every detail supported the goal of building stronger partnerships. “Our colleagues went above and beyond,” Patrizia says. “From planning to execution, the collaboration was seamless. Our location really lent itself to an event that was both lively and productive.”
The feedback, she notes, was immediate and overwhelmingly positive.
“Italian brewers left inspired, energized by meeting global specialists and learning about innovative products they could bring into their own creations. For us, the Hop & Brew School Italy was about making connections from farm to pint, and it delivered on every front.”
