On 11 February, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (IDWGIS) highlights the critical role of women in driving scientific innovation and inclusive progress worldwide. At Caldic, this vision comes to life across our global teams, where women are advancing breakthroughs in food, personal care, and pharmaceutical ingredients while shaping both the culture and future of the scientific industry. We believe that innovation thrives when diverse perspectives are valued and curiosity is encouraged, and our teams exemplify how inclusive, collaborative environments drive real-world impact and progress.
For many of our colleagues, a passion for science began early. From childhood curiosity about nutrition and biology to exploring hands-on experiments, these early experiences laid the foundation for careers where scientific rigor meets practical application. Michelle Chai, Application Development Executive at Caldic Malaysia, recalls: “My interest in science started when I was a young girl visiting our local Science Center. I loved how interactive exhibits helped me visualize scientific concepts. From there, I combined my passion for science with my love for food, which led me to a career in food science.”
Similarly, Anna Magnusson, Product Manager at Caldic Nordic, reflects on how early experiences shaped her path: “As a child, I was very selective about what I ate, which sparked my curiosity about food and how it affects the body. This interest eventually led me to study food and meal science, laying the foundation for my current role.” Bijal Patel, Director of Strategic Sourcing, also highlights how early academic interests guided her career choices: “I discovered my passion for science in middle school through biology and chemistry. I initially considered medicine, but ultimately pursued biotechnology and biochemistry, combining my scientific interests with my business skills through an MBA.”
Today, women at Caldic translate that curiosity into real-world impact, developing new formulations, sourcing sustainable ingredients, and ensuring quality and safety across global supply chains. Yet challenges remain. Bijal reflects on her journey navigating a male-dominated manufacturing environment. “Working closely with a predominantly male team, I had to prove that I understood their requirements and that procurement could be an advocate, not a threat. Listening and collaborating helped me overcome these challenges.”
Caldic’s commitment to inclusivity ensures these barriers can be overcome. By fostering a culture where ideas are welcomed, expertise is recognized, and collaboration is encouraged, we empower women to lead, innovate, and grow. Anna highlights the importance of supportive, inclusive environments: “At Caldic Nordic, everyone is treated fairly, diverse perspectives are valued, and colleagues willingly share knowledge. That allows you to contribute your ideas confidently.” Michelle adds: “An inclusive workplace encourages sharing ideas without judgment. That environment leads to dynamic solutions we wouldn’t achieve alone.”
Progress has been made, but there is more to do. Michelle observes: “More women are studying science and working in product development, but leadership roles still lack representation. I hope to see more women in leadership, research, and science media.” Anna notes: “Progress has opened doors, but support and respect must be part of everyday culture for women to enter, stay, and thrive in STEM.” Bijal echoes: “We’ve come a long way toward equality, but women still prove themselves daily. Collaboration and inclusion are key to a future where everyone’s ideas are heard.”
