Building a culture of safety from the ground up

Imparting safety standards everywhere

At Caldic, maintaining high safety and quality standards isn’t just a line in a handbook, it’s a way of life. That ethos came into sharp focus last year when Caldic Indonesia achieved the prestigious ISO 45001:2018 certification, an international benchmark for occupational health and safety management systems.

For Ade Stephanus, Head of Supply Chain Management, and Wawan Oktiawan, Safety Officer at Caldic Indonesia, the certification was more than a milestone – it was a testament to a deep-rooted cultural shift; one that demanded collaboration, persistence, and a firm commitment to employee well-being.

Learning from one another

“When we became part of the Caldic organization two years ago, it was clear we had work to do,” Ade reflects. “We took a hard look at our facilities, our safety data, and the overall safety culture. We knew we had to raise the bar.” Ade had been part of the team during the transition and knew that a stronger focus on safety was essential. Wawan soon joined to bolster those efforts, bringing with him the expertise needed to implement a robust safety management system. Together, they began to weave safety into the daily fabric of Caldic Indonesia’s operations.

“Several other Caldic locations have already achieved their safety goals,” Ade notes. “We leveraged their experiences and resources to kickstart our own initiatives.” These included safety talks, targeted training, and the Behavior-Based Safety (BBS) program to capture near-miss reports and improve situational awareness. Caldic teams in Latin America have greatly benefited from the BBS program in terms of lost-time incidents (LTIs). Two of our entities have achieved remarkable records: 11 and 13 years without a single lost-time incident. We also achieved results in APAC: several entities, including Caldic Indonesia, have been incident-free for more than two years.

Realistic approach, realistic wins

For Wawan, extending this awareness to all employees - especially those who spend much of their time on the road - was crucial. “We developed digital tools to make safety resources easily accessible from anywhere,” he explains. “No one was left out.”

Ade even brings safety into meeting rooms. “I like to quiz the team before and after meetings. It keeps safety front and center,” he says with a smile.

We go beyond the rulebook. Safety isn’t just a checklist; it’s a mindset. If we want lasting change, we have to lead with action.

The team’s commitment to preparedness was on full display during a collaborative project with a key customer. Together, they created a simulation video demonstrating the proper emergency response during a hazardous chemical spill. “The customer found it so effective they used it to shape their own safety procedures,” Wawan says proudly.

Everyone matters. We want every person here to go home safe, every day. Safety isn’t just a goal, it’s the foundation of everything we do. We’ve had zero lost-time incidents in two years: this is a testament to our efforts to firmly embed the safety culture.
