Making safety a reality

Maintaining a high safety and quality standard is integral to our daily operations at Caldic and we take great care to ensure that all our entities have the required accreditations. Last year, the Caldic Indonesia team obtained the ISO 45001:2018 certification, which provides a comprehensive framework for policies and practices to improve workplace safety.

Head of Supply Chain Management, Ade Stephanus, and Safety Officer, Wawan Oktiawan, at Caldic Indonesia, share how they set about improving the safety practices in their entity that enabled them to obtain the certification.

The Caldic team developed online tools to ensure that colleagues on the road can access safety training sessions.

Having a well-integrated safety system is an intense, collaborative, and continuous effort. Upon becoming part of the Caldic organization two years ago, the regional team reviewed its facilities, safety metrics, and behaviors, and agreed that there was a need to increase safety awareness among colleagues. To this end, Ade, who was already a part of the team, was joined by Wawan to strengthen the safety expertise and support in the implementation of a safety management system.

“Several Caldic locations have realized their safety targets, and we enlisted their support to launch safety talks, training sessions, and the Behavior-Based Safety (BBS) program to keep track of near-miss reports,” Ade explains. The BBS system has been beneficial with our Zero Lost-Time Incident targets. In LATAM, two of our entities have reached 11 and 13 years of zero LTIs. And several APAC entities have been without incidents for more than two years.

This is why it was crucial that this important information and measures also reached colleagues who mostly work on the road. Ade and Wawan developed online tools that were accessible to them.

Ade even quizzes his colleagues before and after meetings to ensure safety is always on top of their minds. They also partake in training sessions for emergency responses to critical situations. Last year, the team collaborated with a key customer to create a simulation video of our emergency action plan during a hazardous chemical spill. The customer subsequently used it as a guide to create their company-specific response plan.

“We go beyond compliance. We are committed to creating a safety culture and can bring about a positive change only if we are proactive with our actions,”

 - Wawan Oktiawan, Safety Officer.

In addition to the procedures and trainings, the team also participates in ‘Zerolympics’: a Caldic APAC initiative that rewards regions initiating creative ways to implement safety measures.

Caldic Indonesia has now also obtained three more certifications: ISO 9001:2015 for quality, ISO 14001: 2015 for environment management, and ISO 22716: 2007 for Good Manufacturing Practices in cosmetics.

“Everyone matters. It’s as simple as that. We want everyone to go home safe to their families. We cannot achieve our business targets if our colleagues aren’t safe and healthy. We have had no lost-time incidents for the past two years, and we are confident that with the measures and safety culture in place, we can continue the momentum,”

- Ade Stephanus, Head of Supply Chain Management.
