Achieving safety goals with Mr. Malt!

In February this year, Mr. Malt, the Caldic brand for brewers in Italy, celebrated five years with no workplace injuries. A notable achievement that continues today.

Mr. Malt’s success illustrates that our zero-LTI target is realistic and attainable. It proves that Caldic’s ‘Safety First’ culture has been successfully implemented in our daily operations. Our dedicated Quality, Health, Safety, and Environment teams (QHSE) – both regionally and globally – have put in extensive efforts to mobilize the entities to put in place a comprehensive  Safety Management System and cultivate a work environment where employee safety is put center stage.

“If experienced employees create safe patterns of behavior and attitudes, new employees are more likely to adopt these behaviors as well.”

This was not an overnight achievement. In fact, when Siro Bellé, Operations and QHSE Manager at Mr. Malt, joined the organization nearly a decade ago, he took the onus of kickstarting a safety framework across their operations. “When we merged with Caldic, it was very easy to integrate our cultures because we shared similar values regarding safety. We also received additional tools that helped us build a robust safety system,” says Siro.

These included programs such as Behavior-Based Safety, wherein colleagues report risky behaviors or cases that could cause potential incidents by scanning a QR code or accessing an app. Relevant corrective actions are carried out following a report. Other initiatives include Life-Saving Rules, which outline behavioral guidelines, and Gemba walks: initiating actions for continuous improvement by conducting a walkthrough at the workplace.

In order to ensure new employees understand safety procedures, protocols, and best practices, Siro and his team also launched a mentorship program where new employees can receive guidance on how to avoid hazards and stay safe. “If experienced employees create safe patterns of behavior and attitudes, new employees are more likely to adopt these behaviors as well,” says Siro. “On the other hand, we noticed that employees with several years of experience develop an overfamiliarity with workflows and equipment, causing them to overlook their actions. This program helps us address that as well,” he adds.

The team also shares incidents that occur in other entities or similar organizations – finding it to be more effective in driving safety-related messaging than the possibly hypothetical cases shared during training sessions.

"Our five-year accomplishment is a collaborative effort of all of our colleagues. It exemplifies Caldic’s commitment to safety and fostering a work culture where everyone takes ownership and accountability for their actions and prioritizes their own and each other’s safety and well-being. At the end of the day, we want all our colleagues to go home safe to their families,” says Siro.
