What is a heat transfer fluid?

A heat transfer fluid, also known as thermal fluid, is a liquid specifically designed to transfer heat from one system to another. Heat transfer oils are used both as coolants and for heating, and in other applications for heat transfer. 

Heat transfer fluid with the right properties

Choosing the right heat transfer fluid requires a lot of attention, as there are many facets to take into account when searching for the most effective thermal fluid. Think of the viscosity, a measure of its resistance to gradual deformation by shear or tensile stress. For liquids, this corresponds to thickness. A fluid with low viscosity and high specific heat is naturally easier to pump, because it is less resistant to flow and transfers more heat. You are also dealing with thermal -or heat capacity, which is the ability to store heat. Flashpoint, the lowest temperature at which the vapor above a liquid can be ignited in air is important, not to forget about the freezing point, the temperature below which a liquid turns into a solid. Last but not least are the regulatory constraints you are possible facing, for example in case of the fluid’s flash point being lower than the temperature of use.

Caltherm D12

Caltherm D12 is a synthetic liquid phase heat transfer fluid with excellent heat transfer properties over a wide temperature range. This fluid is ideally suited for applications requiring efficient cooling and heating applications and delivers excellent heat transfer rates, even at -45°C. Recommended use temperature range:  -85 °C to 260 °C.

Caltherm  66

Caltherm 66 (hydrogenated terphenyls), is the world’s most stable ultra-high-temperature synthetic heat transfer fluid. Caltherm 66 is  a high temperature liquid phase heat transfer fluid. The reference polyphenyl  heat transfer  fluid  with a wide operating range,and excellent thermal stability, for use up to 345 ° C, Its molecular structure of ultra-long life can ensure effective production, reduce breakdowns, decrease maintenance times, and lower operation costs. Its renewable property satisfies the sustainable development policy of the company. The ultra-high-temperature Caltherm 66 heat transfer fluid that is popular among clients around the world is characterized by ultra-long life, renewable material and lower operation cost, which can meet your requirement for sustainable development. Recommended use temperature range:  0°C to 345 °C.

Caltherm SP

This synthetic heat transfer fluid is used in moderate temperature applications. Caltherm SP fluid is designed for use in non-pressurized or low-pressure, indirect heating systems. It delivers efficient, dependable, uniform process heat with no need for high pressures. Caltherm SP is still easy to pump at -28°C, which is quite remarkable given the fact that that some mineral oils can not be pumped at temperatures below -7°C. Caltherm SP enables a quick and easy start-up of heat transfer fluid systems. Recommended use temperature range:  -10 °C to 315 °C.

Caltherm ADX 10

Caltherm ADX 10 is a low viscosity, synthetic organic heat transfer fluid particularly recommended for indirect liquid phase process heating at medium temperatures. It can be easily pumped at low temperature (down to temperatures of -50°C) and heat transfer coefficient of this fluid also leads to a number of benefits when it is used as a single fluid when combined heating and cooling systems. Recommended use temperature range:  -45 °C to 250 °C.

Caltherm BO 400

This is a vapor / liquid dual-use high-temperature synthetic heat transfer fluid with a high degree of heat stability. It can be applied at very high temperatures and is globally used in concentrated solar power (CSP) generation. Its accurate control of the gas temperature is utilized in the chemical fiber industry. Caltherm BO 400 has excellent heat stability and can provide reliable long-term operation within the temperature range of 12 to 400°C, currently making it the heat transfer fluid with best heat stability performance. Recommended use temperature range:  12 °C to 400 °C.

Caltherm S 1050

Caltherm S 1050 is a high performance silicone polymer heat transfer fluid especially designed for use at a low and high temperature (exposed closed systems up to 335°C). For those who need a heat transfer fluid flash point above the system use temperature, with a closed cup flash point at 280 °C, Caltherm S 1050 can provide an extra margin of safety for new legislation. Recommended use temperature range:  -50 °C to 340 °C.

Caltherm UBT

A thermal fluid, especially designed, high performance silicone polymer formulated for use as a low temperature, liquid phase heat transfer medium. It offers remarkable low temperature heat transfer and is easy to pump, in addition with its thermal stability. Caltherm UBT fluid has essentially no odor and a low acute oral toxicity. Suitable applications include single fluid process heating and cooling systems in the pharmaceutical and fine chemical industries. Recommended use temperature range:  -100 °C to 260 °C.

Caltherm UBVI

The Caltherm UBVI heat transfer fluid is a high performance silicone polymer designed for use as a low temperature, liquid phase heat transfer medium. It offers remarkable low temperature heat transfer and is easy to pump, in addition with its thermal stability. With a closed cup flash point above 60°C, Caltherm UBVI fluid can provide an extra margin of safety and reduce system and engineering costs. It has essentially no odor and a low acute oral toxicity. Recommended use temperature range:  -70°C to 260 °C.

Caltherm 400

Highly stable long lasting silicone fluid with a recommended operating temperature range of -40°C to 400°C, the broadest range of any heat transfer fluid. Caltherm 400 has a closed cup flash point above 300°C, can provide an extra margin of safety and reduces system and engineering costs. Caltherm 400 fluid has no odor and is low in acute oral toxicity. Recommended use temperature range:  -40 °C to 400 °C.
